The secret of success

Over the years I have experienced the ups and downs of being a 1099 independent contractor, a self employed sales rep, and a business owner.

When I 1 st started out with my sales career the one thing that I needed was proper training. There was no internet or cell phones.

1973 – Insurance sales, the old fassion way.

My start in sales began with a major insurance carrier, John Hancock Ins.      My sales manager told me that I needed to make 100 cold calls a week using a Crisscross phone directory. Cold calling over the phone dialing for dollars.

The next step in my learning process was the IBM sales training course. This program put me in the right direction. It taught me how to approach sales as a career and not a job.  I went from sales agent to  agency owner with the knowledge I had learned.  I decided to open up my own insurance agency with no money, no location, no assistance. Crazy!

I started out working form my home in a 8 x 10 room. I contacted insurance companies that I wanted  to represent and away I went. I bought leads, I networked at local chambers of commerce and went to every Insurance company meeting to learn, meet other successful agents and recruit the good ones.

I hired a part time telemarketer to work from my home office calling the leads and setting appointments. We had more leads than we could handle so I decided to open an agency office. We continued to recruit, set appointments and and build a successful agency. We went from me, myself and I to more than 23 agents, 6 telemarketers and two full time office associates.

All of this without cell phones or internet! We had great success in a specific market niche. After 22 years I decided to sell the agency and focus on helping other small businesses with their sales and marketing plans.

Today, my advise to small business owners is that your business can’t grow if you don’t have sales and you can’t get sales if you aren’t marketing!
